Home to scenic mountains and peaceful valleys, Alpine lies east of
Livingston and west of the West Fork Obey River. To the south lies Alpine
Mountain, of which part is Alpine Mountain WMA (Wildlife Management Area)
operated by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
In 1913, the Presbyterian Church USA started Alpine Institute on 100 acres
in Alpine. The school grew in prominence and was also sponsored in part by
the Overton County Board of Education. The school attracted students from
many different states and a future Tennessee and an Illinois Governor attended
school there. The High School produced a State Championship Basketball team
in 1922. Today, the old High School Gymnasium is used as a community center
and for hosting community events in Alpine.
The beautiful Alpine Presbyterian Church was built in 1913 as part of the
Alpine Institute Campus. The church still has a faithful attendance today
and is as beautiful as when it was first constructed.
